CONCEPTUAL SPEC WORK — UNOFFICIAL CAMPAIGN

A self-initiated advertising campaign concept exploring how Pirate Ship's brand voice and visual identity translate across paid social formats. Created as a personal study in brand alignment and ad design, not affiliated with or commissioned by Pirate Ship.
KEEP THE TREASURE

ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Why spec work?

Spec campaigns are a professional practice in advertising. Designers and art directors produce fully developed creative work for real brands to demonstrate fluency with a brand's voice, demonstrate strategic thinking, and push their portfolio beyond client-constrained work.

TRANSPARENCY NOTE
All trademarks, brand marks, and product names belong to Pirate Ship. This project is an exercise in brand study and design craft, created with genuine admiration for the work they do.

BRAND STUDY

UNderstanding
the brand
Before touching a single layout, this project required understanding what makes Pirate Ship's identity distinct: a brand that commits fully to the pirate metaphor without tipping into self-parody. The "treasure" framing does real strategic work: it reframes shipping cost savings as something personally won, not just discounted.

VOICE
Direct, punchy, and a little irreverent. Short declarative lines with strong punctuation.
VISUAL TONE
Dark backgrounds with high-contrast type. Gold as a recurring accent for "treasure."
STRategy
Savings framed as value kept, not value discounted — pirate-as-hero narrative.

CREATIVE CONCEPT
The Campaign hook

The central idea: every time a small business ships, they're handing money to someone else. Pirate Ship flips that script. "Keep the Treasure" functions as both a call to action and a brand belief — the treasure is the margin you protect by choosing the cheapest rates available. The campaign runs a narrative arc across six assets, moving from problem awareness to payoff.

DELIVERABLES
PROJECT OUTPUTS

The deliverables work together as a full paid-social and display campaign, not one-off ads. Across six formats, the system moves from problem awareness to payoff, using the same treasure-driven message to show how Pirate Ship helps small businesses ship cheaper and keep more of what they earn.

REFLECTION
WHAT THIS PROJECT
DEMONSTRATES

Working within an established brand without a brief or guardrails requires reading the brand's intent, not just its guidelines. This project was an exercise in internalizing a visual system, constructing a message hierarchy, and producing campaign-ready assets across formats. The constraint of "zero official direction" sharpens the discipline of staying true to the brand while contributing something new.
